ROAD Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has donated road safety materials to Children International (CI) Zambia at three centre libraries in Kanyama, Chibolya and George townships.

The materials are aimed at educating road users in the prevention of injuries and deaths.

Speaking during the handover of the materials, RTSA acting director and chief executive officer Rodgers Nkandu said the donation was part of the commemoration of the fifth United Nations Global Safety Week.

Mr Nkandu said the agency recognised and appreciated the role CI Zambia had continued to play as a stakeholder in saving lives and preventing death on the roads especially among vulnerable road users like children.

“As an agency, we also strongly believe that in our efforts to prevent injuries and fatalities we should be ready to give the best road safety education to all road users, children inclusive,” he said.

Mr Nkandu said RTSA had worked with other stakeholders such as the Ministry of General Education to introduce road safety in the school curriculum as well as the formation of road safety clubs.

He said RSTA had continued to enjoy political goodwill as seen from the support it continued receiving from Government in supporting road safety interventions.

“As you are aware speed continues to be one of the leading contributory factors to road traffic accidents. In response to this, we have seen the introduction of the Enhanced Road Safety Management System, which has seen the introduction of roadside speed cameras in Lusaka,” he said.

Mr Nkandu said RTSA wanted to reduce the number of road traffic crashes by 50 percent by the year 2020 in line with the United Nations (UN) Decade of Action on Road Safety.

CI Zambia country director Chikwe Mbweeda thanked RTSA for the donation.

Ms Mbweeda said the materials would boost the stock of literature in the organisation’s area centre libraries.
