African Union Summit has officially been opened in Lusaka

The African Union Commission says the present situation on the continent marred by various crisis gives a push to adopt different approaches to improve economic and cooperate governance amongst member states.

Speaking at the official opening of the 4th African Union mid-year coordination meeting in Lusaka, Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat says despite the difficulties, Africa is able to solve problems by itself.

Mr Mahamat also says the commission calls for the strengthening of gender equality, decent employment and protection of migrant workers.

He has further called for the speeding of reduction of maternal mortality and implementation of the first and second phase of the African CDC as well as review of its statutes choosing the country that will host its headquarters.

The 4th African Union mid-year coordination meeting is held under the theme “Building resilience in nutrition and food security on the African continent, strengthen agriculture, accelerate the human capital, socio and economic development”

Mr Mahamat further says the theme on food security calls for increased investment on nutrition, strengthening of partnerships and building institutional capacity in order for activitiss carried out to harness the approach on nutrition.

And speaking at the same event, African Union Chairperson of the Executive Council Aissata Tall Sall has underscored the need for African countries to prudently utilize resources in order for the continent to be self-dependent.

Ms.  Tall Sall who is also Senegalise Foreign Affairs  Minister  points out that despite challenges in Africa , the African continent has pontential to resolve its challenges if   there is concerted efforts among Member states.

She says there is need to be an integrated, Prosperous and Peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.

Ms. Tall Sall adds that member states should be able to work for Africa in view of ensuring that the continent is fruitful and beneficial to all.

Meanwhile, Zambia’s Foreign Affairs and International Relations Minister Stanley Kakubo with the continued effort to promote jobs, there is need to invest in peace by acting swiftly to silence the guns on the continent.

Mr. Kakubo also says the continent needs strategies that will ensure economies of member states are prepared to shocks that may come.
