THE emergence of new voices on the music scene comes at a far-fetched cost for any upcoming musician says Eastern Province-based musician, Bornface Soko musically known as Black Bonzo.
Speaking in an interview, the artiste said there was a need to appreciate published music arguing that there is nothing like ‘bad music’ but rather sometime “less understood music.”
“Music is made differently, in some instances is understood differently and that should not make it bad music. Instead let us appreciate the amount of time and effort invested in producing the music,” said Mr. Soko.
The Sinda based rookie said it was tragic that some established musicians were pretentions on having the edge to support young and coming artistes.
“Young artistes are looking to those long established musicians unfortunately they are chasing their own dreams,” he said.
“At one time during a Celtel talent search, I was picked to further technical support to improve my musical skill. I was assigned to work with JK unfortunately he was not available to own up. I went the traditional way of working with those willing. But the journey has been filled with a plethora of challenges.”
Black Bonzo explained that despite having commendable list of collaborations with towering musicians that include B1 on songs like (Chikonko), Pst (Nimasule), General Kanene (Nibwezeleni), GJB (Sankhapo) and Chimz Kelly on Adani Anga there were no short cuts to success.
The 33 years old musician whose birthday coincides with Independence day of Zambia said since the launch of his musical career in 2005, the experience was never a stroll in the park owing it to the nature and environment of the music industry.
“Music has been a challenge. At one time, l slept with some colleagues at a funeral because I could not afford renting a lodge while we recorded.”
“And recording has not been easy because there are no credits and to widely get air play it demands serious marketing which is costly says,” He said.
