One dies, 2 injured in Solwezi road crash

ONE person was killed on Thursday the spot on the Solwezi-Chingola road in North-Western Province in a head-on collision involving a truck and another motor vehicle.

The fatal road traffic accident occurred at Mafita area in Mushindamo district around 19:10 hours.

North-Western Province commissioner Hudson Namachila identified the driver of the Freightliner as Japhet Manonga, 35, of Chazanga Township, Lusaka, and Peter Lukanga as the driver of the Toyota Fortuner SUV of Riverside, Solwezi.

Mr Namachila said while Japhet was trying to overtake another car but miscalculated its speed and ended up colliding with the Fortuner, which was coming from the opposite direction.

“The Freightliner tried to overtake but had a head-on collision with another car. Due to the accident’s impact the persons in the Fortuner sustained multiple injuries,” he said.

Mr Namachila identified the dead victims as Davis Bwalya who died on the spot.

“I can confirm gladly that we also have victims who are alive, but have painful injuries.

“Munalula Lungwangwa, with the age not known, of St Dorothy Health Centre, sustained a deep cut on the head and has a painful waist, Esnart Mulawu, aged 23, of Garneton, Kitwe, sustained a painful waist while the driver, Peter, sustained a bruised left arm,” he said.

Mr Namachila said the driver of the truck escaped unhurt while the injured are admitted to Solwezi General Hospital and the body of the dead is in the hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination.

He said the truck had minor damage while the Fortuner was extensively damaged.

“The driver of the truck is to blame and is facing a charge of causing death by dangerous driving. He will soon appear in court,” Mr Namachila said.
