AGRICULTURE Minister Michael Katambo has urged millers who have accessed maize from the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to immediately reduce mealie meal prices.

Mr Katambo said it was disappointing that despite accessing maize from FRA, the millers were still selling mealie meal at high prices.

He warned that Government would not allow a situation where some selfish millers wanted to take advantage of Zambians by inflating the prices of mealie meal.

Mr Katambo said there was no justification for millers to sell mealie meal at high prices when FRA had supplied maize to them at subsidised prices.

And the Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) has supported the appeal by the government to its members who have accessed maize from FRA to reduce mealie meal prices.

The association’s president, Andrew Chintala, told The Sun that his organisation would soon start monitoring whether millers had started reducing prices of mealie meal.

A check by a The Sun revealed that a 25 kilogramme bag of breakfast mealie meal is fetching between K105 and K110 while roller meal of the same weight is selling between K90 and K98 in most retail shops around Lusaka.

President Edgar Lungu recently directed millers who are accessing subsidised maize from FRA to reduce mealie meal prices.
