THE victories by ZESCO United and Nkana FC in the CAF Confederation Cup competition are a firm indicator that the Zambian league is one of the top leagues on the continent, says FAZ President Andrew Kamanga has said.
In his congratulatory message to Zambian envoys in the CAF Confederation Cup, Nkana Football Club and Zesco United for recording first leg home victories on Saturday and Sunday respectively, Kamanga urged the two teams to keep the Zambian flag flying higher.
He however encouraged the two teams to remain focused ahead of the second leg fixtures set for this weekend.
“A big congratulations to our representatives in CAF competitions. We have no doubt that you will finish off the job in the second leg and make us even prouder,” Kamanga said.
Kamanga said that given the margins posted in the first legs, the Zambian teams could finish off the job with better planning and focus.
Nkana defeated Ivorian side San Pedro 3-0 on Saturday while Zesco United overcame South African giants Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 in a thrilling encounter played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Meanwhile, soccer analyst Iva Lengwe urged ZESCO United to work on the central defence partnership going into the return leg in South Africa.
“Even before they think of scoring a goal in the return leg, I think protection from the central defence is very cardinal in ensuring they qualify to the group stage,” Lengwe said.
He said in an interview yesterday that the current Zambian League champions were shaky in central defence and allowed Chiefs to dictate play despite getting the goals.
Lengwe said beating Kaizer Chiefs was not easy and described the result as a big win for Zambia.
