Fertiliser thieves cornered

TWELVE suspected criminals have been arrested after being found stealing fertiliser at Nyimba Investment storage sheds in Matero township of Lusaka.

The suspects were arrested at the scene after alert members of the public saw them loading bags of fertilisers on a freightliner truck.

Confirming in Lusaka, Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Danny Mwale said the incident occurred on Saturday April 1, 2023 around 21:00 hours.

Mr Mwale said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects who are aged between 22 and 46 of Matero and Kanyama compounds gained entry to the storage sheds after damaging the locking system.

“The truck bearing registration number BAC 7774 and BAD 9660T which was found loaded with 100 bags of compound D Fertiliser has since been impounded,” Mr Mwale said.

He said the total value of the property stolen is yet to be established and the suspects are in police custody waiting to be formally charged.

Meanwhile, a 28 -year- old woman of Mtendere compound has been arrested for child dumping after she was apprehended by a concerned member of the community.

Zambia Police Service Deputy Public Relations Officer Mwale has confirmed the arrest to in Lusaka. 

Mr. Mwale said that the woman identified as Gertrude was seen by a member of the community around 04:00 hours carrying a sack while her clothes were stained with blood. – ZANIS

“After a few minutes, the same member of the community met the suspect again but this time without a sack. At this point, he got suspicious and confronted her,” Mwale said,” he said.

He said that the concerned member of the public asked Gertrude where she had thrown the sack and immediately, she revealed and led the man to the scene where the baby was heard crying a few metres away.

“The man opened the sack and found the baby covered with blood in a bucket,” he added.

Mr. Mwale said that the woman was then handed over to police who later rushed her and the baby to the hospital for medical attention.
