NO child should sit on the floor when they go to school if quality education is to be attained, Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati has said.
Mr Mutati said this was the reason why the government was investing in skills development through trades training institutions to see how best they can be part of the solution of addressing the desks’ deficit being experienced in schools.

He said this can be achieved through the utilisation of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). Mr. Mutati said his ministry wanted to ensure that it is part of the solution for every child to sit on a desk while in school hence the engagement of trades training institutions such as St Mawaggali Trades Training Institute in Choma to come on board through manufacturing of school desks. He was speaking when a paid a courtesy call on Southern Province Permanent Secretary Namani Monze in Choma yesterday. “The President has made it very clear that every child must sit on a desk when they go to school if we are going to deliver quality education. First, we have made it free, we are investing in books and teachers.
“As you know they will soon be recruited. Our mission is to see how we can be part of the solution to ensure that every child sits on a desk. We want to ensure that desks are manufactured by our trades schools which will be supplied to different schools,” Mr Mutati said.
He said this was through providing capacity building, training and addressing the bottlenecks being experienced in the utilisation of the funds.
