Man jailed for stealing from girlfriend

A MAN who stole K6,000 cash, itel phone and NRC from his girlfriend has been sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour.

This is a matter before Kafue magistrate Moffat Phiri in which Luka Haleka was accused of stealing K6,000 cash and other property altogether valued at K6,200. 

It is alleged that on April 4, in Kafue district accused Luka Haleka a security guard at a named company did steal property of Beauty Mweemba without lawful authority.

Beauty Mweemba, 25, of Zambia compound who is an Airtel money agent said on April 12, she woke up early in the morning around 05:00 hours to do her laundry and left her boyfriend sleeping in the house with her four-year-old son.

After a while, Haleka also woke up and went to bath. After finishing bathing he dressed up and went out.

“After finishing doing my laundry I went in the bedroom to check under the mattress where I mostly put my money only to receive the shock of my life, I found my K6,000, NRC and phone I use for transactions gone I immediately took another phone so I could call my phone and I was shocked to hear Haleka’s voice on the other end,” she said.

She said she asked him whether he had seen her money and Halekasaid he was the one having the money. She called him again and this time around the phone was off.

“I told my mother what happened and she helped me with a K3,000 because the money wasn’t mine but float for Airtel money business,” she said.

Mweemba said she reported the matter to the police who apprehended her boyfriend.

Officers interviewed him and he denied the claim but he returned the NRC at the police station.

Haleka: No

Magistrate: Who gave you Mweemba’s NRC?

Haleka: I don’t know anything about that.

Court sentenced Haleka to two years imprisonment with hard labour.
