A Lusaka man has been divorced in the Chilenje Local Court for being promiscuous and failing to provide for his wife and child.
This was in a case in which Jane Sichone, 57, of Chifwema village sued her husband Elias Mthunzi, 57, a farm of the same village for divorce
They were appearing before senior local court magistrate Ackim Phiri sitting with senior local court magistrate Harriet Mbewe.
The two got married in 2002 and have one child together.
Sichone said they have been having disputes since 2007 when her husband married another woman.
“He told me that he was going to live with the new woman he had married. In February, 2015 I moved out of the bedroom and started sleeping in the living,
“We continued having disputes and he threatened to chase me out of the house. I refused and he built another house at the farm and left me alone with the child,” she said.
In May they were reconciled in court but the situation had not improved for the better as Mthunzi did not support the family.
“We both have children from our previous marriages but he accuses me of mistreating his children. We never sat down as advised by the court. I can’t continue with this marriage. I want a divorce,” she said.
In defence, Mthunzi said when they got married they lived in harmony but disputes started when his wife started mistreating his children.
“I do everything for her children but she doesn’t care for mine. She gives priority to her elder son instead of me .She puts hot water for her eldest son and asks me to wait. They eat together and treat him as if he is her husband,
“We sat down several times but she does not want to change. She is a very difficult woman and doesn’t want to live with me. I ignored all these things and forgave her because I love her. I don’t want the marriage to end but I can’t force her to live with me,” he said.
The court granted divorce and ordered Mthunzi to compensate his ex-wife with K8, 000 and maintain his child with K300 per month.
