Baby dumped in stream

A NEWLY born baby was found dumped in the Nakonde stream, near the  Chambeshi Dam on the old Great North Road.

Muchinga Province Commissioner of Police, Joel Njase, said the baby was dumped between July 20 and 24, near Mukoma Village in Chieftainess Waitwika’s area.

“Mr Moses Simwanza, of Ntindi Village in Chieftainess Waitwika’s area of Nakonde, also a Community Crime Prevention Unity (CCPU) member, reported the subject offence of infanticide,” Mr Njase said.

Mr Njase said the infant was found dead.

Police picked up its body after finding it floating in the stream facing downwards with its umbilical cord still attached.

Mr Njase said the body was physically inspected and it was identified as a baby girl but had no physical injuries.

“The body has since been collected from the scene of crime and deposited at Nakonde Urban Clinic mortuary awaiting postmortem,” he said.

Mr Njase said police were investigating the crime to find and apprehend the suspect (mother).

“Police will ensure that whoever is responsible is made to answer the law,” Mr Njase said.

He advised the community to report any suspected person who may have dumped the baby.
