HOME Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo has warned societies that are operating illegally that they risk facing the wrath of the law.

Delivering a ministerial statement in Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Kampyongo said out of the 22,000 registered societies in Zambia, only 11,595 had remitted their 2018/2019 annual returns adding that out of this figure, 41 where political parties.

In this regard, he said out of the 14 political parties earmarked for deregistration, 10 were cancelled for failure to comply with the provisions of the Societies Act.

Meanwhile, two political parties that were de-registered have appealed their de-registrations.

The minister expressed concern that despite having issued a statement earlier where he encouraged registered societies to comply with the Societies Act, Cap 119, some of them had continued to operate in default.

“I wish to warn all those societies operating illegally that once discovered, the law will take its course,” Mr Kampyongo said.

Mr Kampyongo has also appealed to all societies to comply with the provisions of the Societies Act, Cap 119 of the Laws of Zambia.
