Maternal deaths reduce in Luapula

LUAPULA Province is on the right track to bring maternal deaths to zero, says provincial health director Dr. Peter Bwalya.

Dr. Bwalya said that in the second quarter, the province only recorded 7 cases of maternal deaths as compared to 20 in the first quarter.

He attributed the reduction in the numbers of cases to measures which the ministry of health has put in place to ensure zero cases of maternal deaths.

He explained that the ministry has worked closely with traditional leaders in the province who he said had helped in averting any preventable maternal deaths by engaging mothers on the importance of visiting health facilities whenever they fell pregnant.

ZANIS reports that Dr. Bwalya observed that the involvement of traditional and religious leaders to help reduce maternal mortality had proved to be extremely effective in the matter.

Dr. Bwalya said the Ministry of health in the province would continue working at ensuring that no mother died while giving birth.
