LOCAL printing companies should build on their capacity so that they can bid for printing of examination papers, says General Education Permanent Secretary Jobbicks Kalumba.

Dr. Kalumba said that the printing of examinations papers outside Zambia was costing government huge sums of money.

He said the ministry was spending too much money on facilitating the movement of officers charged with the responsibility of overseeing the printing of examinations papers outside Zambia.

Dr Kalumba said that there was need to carry out reforms in the education sector that would allow the printing of examination papers locally.

He wondered why grade seven, nine and 12 papers should be printed outside Zambia when the University of Zambia (UNZA) printed its examinations papers locally.

He said government would save substantial amount of money once the printing of examination papers was localized.

And commenting on the current school curriculum, Dr Kalumba said there was need to come up with one that responded to the needs of the people.

He lamented that the current curriculum did not respond to the needs of Zambians.

Dr Kalumba said Zambia needed a curriculum that encouraged pupils to pursue subjects of their interest or strengths.
