COURT HEARS ABORTION SCANDAL: father allegedly impregnates daughter, gives her abortion drug

THE Choma Magistrates Court has received instructions from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to go ahead and prosecute the matter in which a 42-year-old businessman of Monze is accused of impregnating his biological daughter and later supplying her with a poisonous substance to have the pregnancy terminated.

This is in a matter in which Ricky Kaanga Munkonze is facing two counts and in count one he is charged with incest contrary to section 159(1) as amended by Act No.15 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia while in Count two he is charged with supplying drugs or instruments to procure an abortion contrary to section 153 of Chapter 87 of the Penal Code.

Particulars of the offence in Count One are that on dates unknown but between August 10, 2018 and   September 11, 2018 in Monze District, the accused person had carnal knowledge of a female knowing her to be his biological daughter.

In Count Two it is alleged that on October 2, 2018 in Choma, Munkonze willfully and unlawfully supplied a noxious substance to his daughter in order to procure an abortion.

When the matter came up for plea before Resident Magistrate Richard Chikalanga after several mentions of awaiting instructions, the accused understood the charges read to him but strongly denied allegations leveled against him.

The Court has since entered a plea of not guilty in respect of the accused person, and the matter has been adjourned to July 23, 2019 while Munkonze remains on bail.

Trial starts on July 23.
