GOVERNMENT through its Land Development Fund (LDF) has released K1.3 million towards the construction of township roads in Chirundu, says council secretary John Mwanza.

Mr. Mwanza explained that even though the council requested for K5 million he was grateful that some monies had been released and directly transacted in the Zambia National Service (ZNS) account, the contractors.

He said the money would be used to construct about nine hundred kilometers roads within the new government complex.

Mr Mwanza said he had already received the machinery and ZNS who are camped at the site near Chibbende clinic were expected to start work this week.

Meanwhile, Mr Mwanza has also revealed that sub-chief Peter Choonga of Sikoongo village has found land where a new modern COMESA market would be built.

He said that last week an official from COMESA came to inspect the piece of land on the T2 Road and was satisfied with the expectations and findings.

Mr. Mwanza further said what remained was a signature from Chief Sikoongo to release the land so that the construction of a market could start soon.

Meanwhile, Mr Mwanza has bemoaned the continued illegal water connections by some unscrupulous people to water their gardens in Kayuni and Chilindi villages.

Two weeks ago the council cut all illegal connections.

And Mushungu ward councilor Mr. Ben Munsaka has thanked the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) in Chirundu for its quick response to chase away the elephants that had invaded villages in the ward.

He said that the people cooperated with officers from DNPW and managed to peacefully chase back the elephants to Zimbabwe where they had come from.
