WITH four months away from the inaugural Eastern Expo in Chipata, Katete District Council (KDC) has started its preparations for the event by investing over K200 000 to renovate its dilapidated Mphangwe Motel.

The council-run motel which had remained neglected for many years due to poor administration has since been granted a new life line.
Speaking to the Sun, KDC public relation officer, Clarence Kaoma said the upgrading of the motel was a long-term strategy of influencing development in the town.

He noted that the move was expected to trigger development of the district’s hospitality industry which had shown signs of growth in the recent past.

“The upgrading scheme is ongoing. At this present moment we have injected at least K250 000,” said Mr. Kaoma.
He said the council was striving towards increasing decent accommodation space of reputable standards for both local and international tourists.

“Our long term agenda is centred on restoring the motel to its slot as a preferred guest house for our visitors,
“We want to increase the number of bed spaces of high standards in Katete, with bigger conference halls that can accommodate large indoor and outdoor gathering,” he said

The provincial administration in collaboration with the private sector has since started preparing for the first ever Eastern Province Trade and Investment Expo to be held in Chipata
“As we look forward to the first ever expo in the province, here in Katete we are expectant. We hope that by the time it will be held, the motel will be fully furnished and renovated to expected standards,
“I must mention that we are working around the clock to ensure all is in place. A task force was set up to help monitor and manage the entire hospitality industry in Katete.

Mr Kaoma said local entrepreneurs would benefit from progressive projects meant to create a desired environment for business.
