A LUSAKA woman who has endured beatings for three years has sued her husband for divorce citing  violence.

Lucy Shawa has requested the Kanyama local court to end her marriage because of gender-based violence.

Mutabale Lombe, 27, unemployed of Kanyama First Road was sued by his wife of 3 years for beating and threatening to kill her.

Shawa, 26, of the same locality sued her husband for beating her every time he was drunk.

Lucy narrated before the court how her husband gets violent each time he takes alcohol or whenever he had a side chick.

“Aba ba muna ni vuto ikulu maningi. Bakamwa walwa, nthawi zonse niku ni timba. Osebenza lini nchito okana koma moba tyala nayao nama hule ndiye vokanda,” she said.

(My husband is a big problem. When he drinks he beats me. He does not work, but he loves alcohol and prostitutes.)

Shawa complained how sometimes her husband beat her to the extent of having miscarriages in attempt to try to kill her after she caught him with another woman in her house  when she came back from  the market selling onions.

“Siku iyakine neba pezekeza na hule mu chipinda chasu pa mattress yangu olalana, makolo oziba vuto ili munganda yasu, nalema please acourt ni thandizeni ndaba ani paye ,” she said.

In his defense, Mr Lombe denied ever beating his wife or ever being found sleeping with another woman in their house.

“Chikwati chinga sile sinikana but noti pa reasons ye akamba uyu, pamene ina silila nchito ine nina nkhala useless kuli enve , ulemu sani pasa, so nima mwa kuti ni ibaleko mavuto, bamai bani ziba bwino sininga menye mu kadzi its better namusiya che elo tilibe nabana so why nimuforcinge,” he said.

(The marriage can end but not for the reasons she has put up. I can not beat a woman, it is better I leave her. We do not even have children so why should I force her).

Meanwhile Judge Esther Mulomba has ordered the marriage to end after getting testimonies of the problems in the marriage from witnesses on both parties who also begged the court to dissolve the union.

The Judge also ordered no compensation to anyone but that the couple should share whatever they bought together in the presence of their parents.
