2 die in a road traffic accident

TWO people have died in a road traffic accident on the Great North Road in Mpika while 20 others are nursing injuries, deputy police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has confirmed.

Mr Hamoonga said the accident happened when the driver of a Scania Marco Polo bus registration number ABL 2285 p lost control of the vehicle due to over speeding and flipped when he wanted to make a right turn into Great North Road.

 In a statement to the Sun Mr Hamoonga said there  were 64 passengers on board, mainly United Church of Zambia (UCZ) Girls Brigade members that had a camp meeting at Mpika Boy’s School.

“The bus was extensively damaged in the front with broken left side glasses. Twenty passengers who are UCZ congregants sustained slight injuries and have been attended at the Michael Chilufya Sata Hospital,” he said

He said the driver identified as Lewis Nkandu Mwewa aged 41 years of Ndola was still on the run.

The bodies of the dead have since been deposited into the Mpika Urban Clinic Mortuary.
