Witch remark earns woman K2, 000 fine

THE Boma Local Court has ordered a 27 year old woman of Lusaka’s Garden Compound to compensate her former neighbour with K2, 000 for calling her a witch.
Cecilia Mubanga, 37 of Chilulu Compound told Senior Local Court Magistrate Ng’andu Mukuka that Faidess Chulu was her neighbour in 2018.
She said one day her friend asked her to escort her to see someone who lived in the same yard as Chulu.
She got a shock of her life when Chulu’s husband suddenly approached and asked her to confirm whether he was dating her daughter.
“He asked me to confirm if it was true that he was dating my daughter. His wife suddenly came from nowhere and starting screaming that I’m a witch. She insulted me and assaulted me and I reported her to police,” said Mubanga
She also said that Chulu was also holding a knife when she attacked her and she chased her around.
In defence Chulu however denied ever calling Mubanga a witch.
She explained that she had known Mubanga for a long time but had no idea that her former neighbour had intentions of destroying her marriage.
“We had a close relationship and her children even used to come to my house. Her daughters started asking for money from my husband and when I confronted them, they said their mother is the one who is encouraging them to talk to my husband,” said Mubanga
She also told the court that when Mubanga went to her place after they had stopped being neighbours, she sent her husband to talk to her but Mubanga instead attacked her and started beating her.
“She started insulting me instead of talking to my husband. She even injured me and I even got a medical report. I did not call her a witch but all I said was that her behaviour of initiating a relationship between her daughter and my husband was equal to that of a witch,” said Chulu
The court found that Chulu was agitated because her husband had relations with Mubanga’s daughter and the probability of her calling Mubanga a witch was high.
Magistrate Mukuka then ordered Chulu to compensate Mubanga with K2, 000.
