A resident of Kayuni Village in Mushungu ward of Chirundu district Tomic Manyonga has expressed worry over killings of livestock by a crocodile that has been spotted in the nearby Nkampu Dam.

Mr. Manyonga said the dam was the nearest water reservoir for both people and animals in the village.

He said however that people were now scared to fetch water from the dam due to the presence of the reptile.

He said that apart from that the people were worried over their animals on which they depended in view of the drought which had hit many parts of Zambia recently.

“We will now have to depend on our livestock being threatened by the crocodile in the dam for our survival due to the prevailing hunger situation that has befallen us. We therefore do not want to lose our animals to the crocodile,” he said.

He immediately appealed to the department of national parks and wildlife (DNPW) to quickly move in and control the reptile.

And DNPW has promised to send some officers to the area as soon as possible to protect both human and animal life.

Meanwhile Kayuni villagers have been advised to cooperate with the officers who will be sent to the area and allow them to execute their duty without disturbances or confusion.

And Chirundu district council chairman Robinson Sianduba has advised the people in all the ten wards in the district to inform their area councilors and report all cases of wildlife and human conflicts.

Mr. Sianduba said human/wildlife conflicts were a battle that needed everyone’s cooperation.
