Embrace education, athletes advised

ZAMBIAN sportspersons should take education seriously because sporting careers have a short lifespan, a boxing promoter has advised.

Oriental Queries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) Communications Manager Chris Malunga said local athletes should take education seriously if they were to secure their future.

Speaking in an interview with The Sun, Malunga said it was for that reason that his company had been encouraging their boxers to acquire some education.

He said boxers needed to realise that anything could happen during a fight and abruptly end one’s career.

“This is why we tell them to embrace education because in an event of an accident, one can still be able to live a comfortable life but that can only happen when one has acquired some level of education,

“In as much as one might be successful as a boxer or indeed an athlete, it is important to be a professional in another field so that he/she can have something to hold on to after their sporting career. Our sportspersons need to understand that sport is a short career, said Malunga

Malunga further said that it was also important for sportspersons to go to school so that they understood about contracts during their sporting career.

“If they go to school, they are unlikely to be manipulated by selfish people because they will be able to read and understand documents and contracts related to their career,” Malunga added.
