THE decision by former Women International Boxing Organisation (WIBO) welterweight World Champion Esther Phiri to form a boxing academy has cheered her ex-trainer Anthony Mwamba.

Mwamba who is Exodus Boxing Promotions manager said it was encouraging to see his product establishing an academy in her community.

“I am encouraged to see somebody I trained establish an academy and I think she needs to be supported by everyone. This is a commendable move.

“Challenges are there but I know Esther is a fighter from the time she became a champion so I have no doubt she will succeed but she needs our support,” Mwamba said.

Mwamba recently donated some boxing training equipment to Phiri’s academy which operates from NRDC grounds.

Phiri told the Sun in a recent interview that lack of a community centre in the area where children could be doing sports activities had contributed to some youths getting involved in criminal-related activities.

The Esther’s Nest Academy is located in Mtendere-PHI area which housed three sports disciplines in boxing, pool and soccer.
