Daredevil thief admits stealing from court

AN UNEMPLOYED man has admitted stealing K16,026 cash and two mobile phones from the cashier’s office at the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court Complex.
Before Principal Resident Magistrate David Simusamba today was Derrick Chipungu, 41, of Chipata compound, who pleaded guilty to one count of breaking into a building and committing a felony, contrary to Section 303 (a) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Chipungu also stole an HTC phone and a Samsung phone altogether valued at K18, 526 on January 25, 2019.
Asked how he broke into the building, Chipungu said he entered through the main entrance around 11:00 hours when he went to hear a case of a certain person.
He hid in the basement of the magistrates’ chambers until after 17:00 hours when he broke into the cashier’s office and stole the items.
He told Mr. Simusamba that he attempted to get out of the building through a broken window pane when he was apprehended by security guards.
The case comes up on February 13, 2019 for facts and sentencing while Chipungu has been remanded in custody.
Meanwhile, a Ministry of Justice office assistant has been charged for theft by persons employed in the public service, contrary to Section 277 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Particulars of offence are that George Kaira, 27, stole a black HP computer valued at K6, 000, property of the Ministry of Justice.
In another matter, a security guard has been charged for breaking into a building and committing a felony, contrary to Section 303 (b) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Particulars of offence are that between January 29 and 30, 2019, Reuben Kameme, with intent to steal, broke into Muvi TV studio and stole a 55 inch LG TV and three decoders all valued at K22,800, property of Muvi TV.
