MOST people in compounds are exposed to contaminated water which they fetch from shallow wells, says Economic Liberation Association (ELA) director Matomola Likwanya.

Mr Likwanya said there was therefore need for government to provide clean and safe water.

He was speaking in Lusaka yesterday when his organisation in conjunction with Water Aid distributed chlorine to thousands of Misisi Compound residents

In an interview with the Sun, Mr Likwanya said ELA, a community decided to donated chlorine because people in compounds were exposed to contaminated water which they fetched water from shallow wells  for drinking and cooking.

Mr. Likwanya said the water was contaminated because of blocked drainages and poor sanitation thereby posing serious becoming health hazard for the residents.

He explained that the distribution of chlorine was aimed at reducing the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and ensuring that the residents of the compound had clean and safe water.

He said communities could not develop if the issues of water were not properly handled.

He has also appealed for sponsorship from well-wishers so that more people in compounds had access to clean and safe water.
