Chongwe charcoal traders cry for empowerment

GOVERNMENT through the empowerment programs should consider empowering women in Chongwe district to avoid dependence on charcoal business, Brenda Mposhi has said.
In separate interviews with The Lusaka Sun, in Chongwe district, Ms Mposhi a mother of six said the business of selling Charcoal, which was her source of livelihood.
She observed that business was slow because people did not have a lot of money.
Ms Mposhi complained that in a day she sold three to five bags with a profit of K5.00, which was not enough to meet her daily needs or to allow her venture into another business.
“It would be good if government empowered us, the women of Chongwe district. Selling of charcoal alone is not good enough I would love to venture into other businesses,” she said.
“It is hard to make ends meet just selling charcoal,” she said.
“We order the bags at K35 and sale at K45 or K50. In a day we sell three or five bags because the people in Chongwe do not have much money,” she said.
Meanwhile, Evans Chileshe said he loved his charcoal business and wanted to be empowered in the same trade so that he could boost his business.
