Cattle carcasses land two in court

TWO men have pleaded not guilty to one count of being in possession of eight cattle carcasses suspected to be stolen or unlawfully obtained.

Before Lusaka Magistrate Felix Kaoma on Friday were Cephas Mwiinga, 39, a farmer, and Stan Kabeba, 48, a businessman.

Mwiinga had skipped his police bond on which he was released from police custody on December 27, 2018 and after plea, he explained that upon being released from custody, the police transferred him to Chibombo for his other court case in Kabwe.

He later missed some court sessions and was only arrested on bench warrant.

He was later remanded in custody from where he was taken to court last Friday while Kabeba came from home as he was still on police bond.

But upon noting that the police bond conditions for both accused persons were inadequate, Mr. Kaoma varied the conditions and put them on K 5, 000 bail each in their own recognisance with working sureties in the like sum.

He told the two that they would remain in custody until they met the bail conditions.

Trial starts on February 12, 2019.
