THE Zambian comedy sector mainly dominated by male comics is slowly getting competitive as a number of female artistes have teamed up to present the first-ever Zed Queens of Comedy show.

This event planned for February 1 and 2 is being organised in collaboration with the Comedy Association of Zambia (CoAZ) and will be used to honor late actress Mutale Macholowe. Macholowe was an instrumental figure in planning event which CoAZ  president and renowned comedian Chibwe Katebe believes is the best way to remember Macholowe who died last week was to dedicate it to her.

He also insists that for a long time now, female artistes in various sectors are marginalized and this occasion will help motivate them.

“ We hope this initiative to host comedy queens will help motivate our ladies and give us another chance to celebrate our colleague. She was the running machine behind the project,” Katebe said.

CoAZ has on several occasions attempted to promote female acts.In 2017, the association introduced the Divas of Comedy, which fared well but still did not inspire a lot of motivation.

Katebe says with the increased number of female comedians in the last few months, it would be important to support this big event.

The female acts rounded up for this task are coming from different parts of Zambia and their unity of purpose for this occasion will encourage the organisers to make the event yearly.

The show sponsored by Ambassador Wines and QTV will take place at the Lusaka Playhouse and will feature comics Chansa Lamba, Mirriam Lungu, Sarafina Ntenga, Mutinta Moono and Yvonne Tamaka.

Others are Sekanayo TF Mfula, Mutinta Miyanda, Jessy Lungu and Memory.
