ALL PRISON FACILITIES IN LUSAKA CONGESTED

All the six prison facilities in Lusaka Province are congested with a total of 3,651 inmates against a holding capacity of 1,217 as at October 3, 2022.
This is according to a state of reformatories report presented by Lusaka Central correctional facility officer-in-charge Teddy Silwamba, during the opening of October criminal session before High Court Judge Catherine Lombe-Phiri.
Lusaka Central correctional facility has 1,093, Kamwala Remand facility 1,048, Mwembeshi Farms correctional 431, Mwembeshi Maximum facility 820, Chainama East facility 135 and Lusaka Central female facility 124.
Mr Silwamba informed the court that the security situation in all the correctional facilities was calm and the inmates had enough food ration.
He however stated that the Zambia Correctional Service was still grappling with the issue of congestion.
