SIX people have died in an ac- cident on the Great North Road in Shiwang’andu dis-

Four of the victims, who in- clude the bus conductor, died on the spot, while the other two died, upon arrival at Chinsali General Hospital.

Fourteen passengers escaped unhurt, while 41 others, together with the bus driver, identified have been injured and are admitted to hospital.

The accident, which involved a Zhong Tong bus, belonging to Mbwee Motors and a Tanzanian- registered Scania truck, happened yesterday around 14:50 hours at Kanakashi village.

Shiwang’andu District Com- missioner, Evelyn Kangwa and Muchinga Province Police Com- missioner, Lizzie Machina, have confirmed the accident in separate interviews.

Ms. Machina has said the Na- konde bound bus hit into the right side of the trailer of the truck, whose driver had failed to keep to his lane.

She has explained that in the process, the driver of the bus lost control, and the vehicle Veered off the road, before falling into a dry stream.

Police have since launched a search for the truck driver, who managed to run away immediately after the accident.ZANIS
