ZAF LUSAKA CROWNED CHAMPS

ZAMBIA Air Force, (ZAF) Lusaka was crowned champions of the revived inter unit sports competition which was held at the Lusaka Base on Thursday.
The hosts of the competition Lusaka walked away with a Commanders trophy which came with a K30, 000 icing after shrugging off competition from headquarters pushed into second position but walked away with K20 000 while third placed ZAF Twin Palm pocketed K15 000.
The games attracted over 1,000 air force personnel from across Zambia competing in different sporting discipline which included volleyball, basketball, chess, squash, darts, golf, athletics, pool and football.
And in closing the event Deputy Commander Major General Benedict Kalinda who stood in for the Air Commander Lieutenant General David Muma, stressed the need for the command to support sports not only soccer but other disciplines too.
Gen Kalinda said that his command would continue to support formations and units with sport incentives to maintain the momentum borne out of the four- day event.
He said it was the conviction of the command that support to sports should not be limited to soccer alone but extend to various sporting activities such as volleyball, basketball, chess and many others.
He noted that it was exceedingly amazing to see a display of great talent and fitness levels from his own military personnel.
He said commanders from all defence wings were working on organizing a successful inter- service games and the command was keen to seeing an outstanding performance from its troops.
Kalinda assured of his command’s commitment to supporting the national efforts in promoting all sports disciplines.
“This endeavour will not only be undertaken as a social corporate responsibility , but also as a serious military requirement for the purposes of keeping fit, maintaining discipline and morale among others,’’ Kalinda said.
Sports activities in the life of a military person are meant to prepare personnel to enhance their much needed physical and mental ability so that they are always combat ready.
The ZAF inter sports unit were revived this year after having last held in 2009 and next year’s event will be held at Mumbwa base.
