SEVERAL people including widows in Siavonga and Chirundu districts have been swindled out of their money by a named unscrupulous church organization based in Lusaka.
The church organization is reported to have taken advantage of the hunger situation in the areas by promising the unsuspecting victims of big loans and other incentives.
According to information obtained by the Sun at the weekend Police in Chirundu and Siavonga have so far recovered over K80,000 from the same organization.
The victims were told to pay upfront contribution of between K100 and K1, 500 before they could be given the loans as collateral.
The swindled, mostly women groups on Friday morning stormed the district commissioner’s office seeking government intervention in the matter.
Siavonga and Chirundu districts were currently experiencing high poverty levels and severe hunger situation which has created desperation among the locals.
Last year, another organization collected money from marketeers and fishmongers in Siavonga district as capital contribution but later instead of giving out loans, it dished out rice to the women groups.
Police spokesperson Esther Katongo could not be immediately reached for a comment.
