RESIDENTS of Sinda District, in Eastern Province, have appealed to banks to consider setting up branches in the area to enable them keep their money safely.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, on behalf of the other residents, Jairos Banda said establishment of a bank in the district would help reduce the cost of traveling long distances in search of banking facilities.

Mr Banda wondered why it had taken long for the banks to establish branches in the district when it had many business opportunities, lots of civil servants and farmers in the area.

“The people of Sinda District want a bank facility, it is not fair that people should be travelling to Katete and Petauke for banking services because after carrying out some transactions they leave their money there only to go back to their homes in Sinda District without change,” he said.

Mr Banda has also called on Kapoche Member of Parliament, Charles Banda, and Sinda Member of Parliament, Masautso Tembo, to put their efforts together to secure fire tender for the district as opposed to calling for one from Katete District every time there is a fire in the area.

He explained that the community panicked last week when one of the houses in the Township caught fire and the people had no alternative but to use buckets of water to quench the fire.

Mr Banda said the setting up of services, like banks and fire services, would help provide job opportunities for some youths who were busy roaming the streets.
