Police appear in court for aggravated robbery

TWO police officers and a Lusaka businessman have appeared in the Lusaka Magistrate Court on counts of aggravated robbery involving over US$68, 000.

The suspects in this matter are Bugster Himuyaba, 32, of Chilanga District, Charles Mwanza, 29, of Kamwala South residential area and Robson Chungu, 36, of John Howard Township.

They are charged with aggravated robbery contrary to Section 294 (1) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that on July 6, 2019 jointly and while acting together with other persons unknown and whilst armed with a pistol did steal from US$68, 200 cash from Ilyas Patel.

The suspects also threatened to use actual violence on the said Patel in order to obtain or return or prevent resistance from the money being stolen.

The three appeared yesterday before Lusaka Chief Resident Magistrate Lameck Mwale for explanations of the charge.

After explaining the charge, Magistrate Mwale informed the suspects they will not take plea because the offense is only triable in the High Court.

The suspects will to appearing in the subordinate court awaiting instructions are issued by the Director for Public Prosecution (DPP).

The matter has been adjourned to August 21, 2019 for mention. The three remain in police custody.
