A 27-year-old man of Lusaka’s Kabangwe residential area, yesterday committed suicide after a dispute with his girlfriend identified as Patricia Malasha.
According to the eye witness, Barnabas Bwalya who was cohabiting with Ms Malasha in the Kabangwe Area, on Wednesday morning locked her in the house and severely beat her, while threatening to kill her and their nine months old son.
The witness said Bwalya threatened that he would kill Ms Malasha, the son and later take his own life.
However, the witness said, Ms Malasha, who by then was bleeding from a head injury he inflicted on her, managed to escape from the house after some alert neighbors broke the door of the house.
The witnessed explained that Bwalya remained behind in the house but later hanged himself in one of the bedrooms after realizing he would be apprehended for assaulting his wife.
“What happened is that the landlord came to see me around 9 hours and told me that ‘her husband’ wanted to grab her son’s phone,” said the eye witness.
“She went back into her house but later started screaming for help. We rushed there and found the man holding the baby in one hand, a knife in the other and shouting he would kill the baby and later kill himself,” said the eye witness.
She said, “We managed to break the door and that’s how she managed to come out of the house. After he realized that people had ganged up to try and apprehend him, he retreated in the house and hanged himself in one of the bedrooms using a rope.”
Kabangwe Police later collected Bwalya’s body after they were informed about the suicide case.
