A CADET officer bolted and vanished after his attempts to deposit counterfeit bank notes amounting to K2,400 into a mobile money account at the on-going Agriculture and Commercial Show in Lusaka was thwarted.

The young trainee ran off and disappeared into the crowd after realising that his attempt to launder the dirty money was busted by an alert mobile money transfer agent much to the astonishment of some showgoers.

This happened on Saturday, August 3, at around 09:23 hours in the Showgrounds.

The scammer wanted to take advantage of the excitement and confusion caused by the presence of multitudes of showgoers but his plan flopped.

Police public relations officer Esther Katongo said the cadet was on the run after attempting to bank counterfeit notes.

Ms Katongo said the matter was reported by a mobile money agent identified as Martin Mutale of Lusaka’s Ibex Meanwood area, who was almost duped.

She said when the cadet was questioned by Mutale where he got the counterfeit notes he wanted to deposit from he ran away and disappeared in the milling crowd.

“The counterfeit notes are all in K100 notes and bearing the same serial number FF128279922,” Ms Katongo said.

She said police in Lusaka had launched investigations into the matter.

Ms Katongo vowed that the police would use their available means to have the cadet cornered.

“Arrangements are being made to have the suspect identified through relevant institutions,” she said.
