Away with sodomy!

SODOMY is said to be one of the ugliest words in the English language, taken from the Canaanite city of Sodom, whose demolition along with Gomorrah is interrelated in the Bible.

Interestingly, the same Bible links men who practice sodomy or homosexuality with thieves and says that neither will inherit the Kingdom of God.

In simple language sodomy is anal sexual intercourse with another person of the same or opposite sex. In the act, the male private part is inserted into the anus of the other man from behind or the back.

Homosexuality has always been considered depraved because most couples do things anally which can cause a disease. Anal intercourse is bad for opposite sex couples too. It is bad for everyone.

There is no doubt sodomy is malevolent and this has forced some African countries to impose various forms of chastisement to contain it.

In Sudan, Somalia, Somaliland, Mauritania and Northern Nigeria, homosexuality is punishable by death. And these countries have no apologies about it.

In Tanzania, Sierra Leone and Uganda, offenders can receive life imprisonment for homosexual acts.

In Zambia, such sex under the country’s sodomy law, carries a sentence of up to 14 years in prison. This shows how grave this crime is.

There is no doubt that sodomy or homosexuality is happening in Zambia every day and gaining ground, especially in towns and cities where some men have taken it as a fad imported from the ‘civilized’ West.  Once, a former convict admitted that there is rampant sodomy in Zambian prisons, with the condemned section at Mukobeko Maximum Prison, recording the highest incidences.

It’s just that in our African culture, it’s believed to be taboo and hence Zambians are doing it in hiding but the unfortunate ones who get caught will continue to suffer the wrath of the law.

But why a man in his right structure of mind should find relaxation in having anal sex, is the Devil’s supposition although this sin will continue to live as long as man is there.

We think this fiend must also know why our 53-year-old farmer, Douglas Watt of Farm number 4007 in Chisamba and a 17-year-old grade 12 boy, are today in trouble over unnatural offences.

The have since pleaded not guilty to two counts of sodomy in a Lusaka Magistrates’ Court.

Particulars of the offence, in the first count, are that between May 2019 and July 17, 2019, Watt had carnal knowledge of the juvenile against the order of nature.

In the second count, the 17-year-old allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of Watt against the order of nature on the same dates.

But Zambia being a Christian nation, we think the issue of sodomy is obnoxious and those who practice it deserve not only to be punished according to our existing law, but empathy as well.

We also can’t agree more with other schools of thought who have continued to contend that homosexuality is a mental disorder and those gay patients should receive treatment to change to heterosexual.

We also think that the church and other concerned stakeholders have a bigger role to play in inculcating moral values in the nation to lower the ugly incidence of sodomy in Zambia.
