Own clean-up campaign, Zambians implored

MINISTRY of Local Government Permanent Secretary (PS) Amos Malupenga, has implored Zambians to own the Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Programme.
Mr Malupenga observed that the campaign had not yielded the intended results since it was re-launched by the President Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu in April 2017.
In a statement issued by Lusaka City Council (LCC) public relations manager, George Sichimba, the PS said this in Lusaka yesterday when he addressed Councilors and LCC management at Nakatindi hall.
The meeting was called to discuss ways of stepping up cleaning activities in communities.
Mr Malupenga observed that the campaign had not transcended to the local communities and that people only participated in the monthly cleaning activities when the Republican President was taking part.
“The President just gives us support but the onus is on all citizens to take the campaign as theirs if we are to achieve the desired results,” he said.
He further said councilors were key in mobilising people in their respective communities to participate in the monthly Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Cleaning exercise.
He added that councilors were always in contact with the people at local level which made it easy for them to mobilise people for cleaning activities.
And Mr Malupenga has assured the councilors that resources for carrying out the cleaning exercise will be made available.
He also emphasised that the general public should not refrain from relying on handouts such as money in order to participate in the cleaning process.
He observed that if people continue to demand money in order for them to clean up, it will be difficult to achieve the objective of keeping Zambia clean.
He also called for involvement of the media to help spread the word on the importance of keeping surroundings clean.
Mr Malupenga committed K200, 000 which translates into K6 000 per ward for this month’s cleaning activities while, Lusaka Town Clerk Mr. Alex Mwansa pledged the equivalent from the council for each ward.
And speaking at the same event, Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa appealed to the corporate world to spare some funds from their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) budgets to help keep the city clean.
Mr Sampa said once the city is kept clean, outbreaks of diseases like Cholera, would be a thing of the past.
