Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) regrets the accident involving a recovery train and a truck that occurred at Kapiri Mposhi’s Lukanda Level Crossing in the early hours of today.
This morning at 00:35hrs, a Volvo Truck Registration Number BAK 2182, and a Trailer Registration Number BAH 9400 belonging to TIME TIME TRANSPORT hit into Zambia Railways Locomotive No.242 on train 562 carrying a Crane destined for Ndola. This resulted in the locomotive capsizing while the truck and trailer burst into flames causing serious injuries to the truck driver who was rushed to the hospital.
The accident caused a blockage of the level crossing which was unblocked around 02:00hrs after the Fire Brigade team managed to put off the fire.
Meanwhile ZRL Chief Executive Officer Christopher Musonda is deeply concerned with the increasing number of level crossing accidents, as a result of motorists disobeying traffic rules.
Mr Musonda has warned that ZRL will take legal action necessary to arrest the situation in addition to claims including prosecution of the individuals and companies that are found wanting.
“The rate at which motorists are disobeying traffic rules at level crossing is worrisome as well as a huge concern to Zambia Railways Limited. These accidents are not only posing a risk to human life, but they are also a huge cost to ZRL through repairs of damaged equipment as well as the rail track” said Mr Musonda.
He has revealed that ZRL will recover the full cost of repairing the locomotive from the trucking company after technical assessment.
Mr Musonda reiterated the need for concerted efforts among stakeholders such as the Road Transport and Safety Agency as well as the Zambia Police in addressing rail road safety issues.
The Zambia Railways CEO has thanked the Zambia Police, the Fire Brigade team as well as the surrounding community for the support during this regrettable incidence.
Zambia Railways would like to urge motorists to observe traffic rules for their own safety and other road and rail users.
The railway line has since been opened for normal train operations.
