THE construction of public toilets at Kamulanga market in Kabwata will help fight waterborne diseases, says area councillor for ward 9 Jonas Phiri.

Mr Phiri said for a long time now marketeers at the facility had been using pit latrines posing a danger of outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

He said however that the construction of toilets by the Lusaka City Council (LCC) using ward development funds was most welcome state of affairs.

The ward councilor said the construction will cost about K200,000 while other monies would be diverted to upgrading a youth recreation facility at Jack Township grounds.

He warned members of the community to safeguard the facility against vandalism and work with his office to ensure there development in the area.

“These projects are funded by public funds therefore it is imperative that each and every resident makes use of these facilities and must safe guard them against vandalism,

“Yes development is sometimes delayed because of promises of procurement but at the end of the day as residents we are the ultimate winners once we have the project done,” he said.

Meanwhile Mr Phiri said the LCC health committee would soon visit the ward to check on residents keeping livestock if they had permits to do so.

Last week Mr Phiri expressed concern over the increase in the number of residents keeping livestock in the area.

He said he had been receiving complaints from other residents of one community who was keeping cattle in his backyard

She said villagers could now sleep peacefully because they did not have to stress about the source of maize anymore.
