ILLEGAL sell of alcoholic drinks in Lusaka’s Chilenje Township shebeens has angered residents who have appealed to Lusaka City Council (LCC) to quickly move in and demolish them.
Some residents interviewed by the Sun, complained of the increasing number of illegal outlets and how negatively it they were impacting the community.
Ms Alice Chikwala narrated how the noise from the shebeens near her house stopped her from having goodnight sleep as it started as early as 06:00 hours till into late hours of the night.
She complained of the noise from drinkers who yelled abusive language the whole night.
“This township is never free of people who are always drunk as the drinking places are open 24 hours a day. Most of these shebeens have been established in homes where they are selling alcoholic drinks. We want the council to come in and demolish these illegal structures,” she said.
Mr Wilson Nkuni, another concerned, resident said the problem with illegal drinking outlets was that often they sold their drinks cheaply that even the young children could easily access them.
“Illegal drinking places are a big problem in our community because they have contributed to the high levels of crime. There are a lot of illegal activities such as sex and smoking that are happening in these illegal outlets. It is high time that the local authority clamped the illegal drinking outlets because they are a nuisance to the society,” he said.
