One month old baby dumped in the bush

UNKNOWN people in Nakonde District have dumped a one month old baby girl in the bush about five metres away from the Great North Road.
Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Joel Njase confirmed the incident which he said happened on June 13 at around 00:00hours at Chimyantu village.
“We received a report of child desertion which occurred today at around 00:00 hours at Chimyantu Village in Chieftainess Waitwika’s of Nakonde district in which a one month old baby girl has been deserted in the bush about five metres from Great North Road.’’ Mr Njase said.
Mr Njase said the villagers got concerned and went in the bush to check what was happening only to find an abandoned baby girl.
“The brief facts are that, a group of villagers (charcoal burners) who were on their way to Nakonde town to sell charcoal, heard a baby crying in the bush, about meters away from the Great North Road near Kantongo Village.’’ Mr Njase said.
Mr Njase said the incident was immediately reported to the r village secretary, who later handed over the baby to the headman.
“The Village Headman reported the matter at Nakonde Police Station and handed over the baby girl to the Victim Support Unity (VSU).’ ’he said.
Mr Njase said the baby has since been taken to Nakonde Urban Clinic and the medical personnel confirmed that she was in good health.
He said the department of social welfare had since been informed and was working on modalities on the custody of the child.
Mr Njase said no arrests has been made and police have since launched investigations into the matter.
And commenting on the same Chimyantu village headman Ansywell Sikapizye 56 confirmed that an unknown person dumped a one month old baby in the bush.
