A MAN of Kasama identified as Evans Mwila, 23, of Chief Munkonge’s area, has hanged himself after a quarrel with his younger brother over nshima.

Headman Bulanda confirmed the incident to the Sun yesterday and described the incident as tragic.

Headman Bulanda said the deceased committed suicide by hanging himself between 19:30 hours and 20:00 hours on Sunday when his brother, identified as Onisha Mwila, refused to give him nshima.

He said that on the material day, the deceased who happened to be married, asked for nshima at his mother’s house but his brother refused to serve him prompting him to commit suicide.

The traditional leader said Mwila told his mother that he would kill himself because he could not continue to live with a disrespectful younger brother.

He said the deceased told his mother that he could not kill his younger brother but would instead take his own life.

“I was told that around 17:00 hours, Mwila went to his mother’s house and asked for nshima but the young brother refused to give it to him because he had a wife who could cook for him,” explained Headman Bulanda.

He said, “The deceased got very angry because when he told his mother about how his younger brother answered him, she also told him the same.  I am told he said that since he could not kill his younger brother, he would instead kill himself since he could not manage to live with a disrespectful young brother,

“His mother thought it was a joke without knowing that he had gotten her chitenge material which he used to hang himself,” Headman Bulanda said.

He said that the deceased’s body was discovered during the early hours of yesterday and would be buried today after authorisation from the police.
