A 50-YEAR-OLD woman of Lusaka has sued her son-in-law over the delayed payment of K4,000 bride price balance from the K12,000 he had been charged.

Joyce Mwango Mutale of Kabulonga sued Gilson Mukabainga, 33, of Garden House over his failure to complete paying the bride price.

They were appearing before Chelstone local court presiding magistrate Mary Namangala.

Mutale said her son-in-law, Mukabainga, promised to finish paying the bride price as charged but had not fulfilled his promise.

She said Mukabainga one time sent her daughter packing from his matrimonial home because of the misunderstandings the two had been having in their marriage.

Mutale said she charged him K12,000 in 2015. He only paid K8,000 and had not managed to finish up the remaining balance of K4,000.

“And whenever I call him he gives me excuses that he is not working at the moment,” she said.

“I want him to finish up paying bride price we charged him because it has been long, and on one fateful day I only received a shock of my life when he brought my daughter home saying that they can’t be together after having disputes,” she said.

In his response Mukabainga said the issue of balance was well known and that he had not refused to pay.

“I did not refuse to pay the balance, but it’s just that I have issues as well. But I will surely pay when I have money,” he said.

Upon hearing both sides the court ordered Mukabainga to pay the K4,000 balance in two installments.
