3 die in six-vehicle pileup (Pictures)

THREE people were killed and six others seriously injured in a road traffic accident involving six vehicles on Monday on the Great North road south of Isoka District.
The accident happened around 09:00 hours when the brakes of a Scania truck loaded with soya beans failed and it rammed into five other motor vehicles and a motor cycle.
In a statement issued to the Sun,
Zambia police public relations officer Esther Katongo said in a statement the driver died on the spot with two other passengers.
Ms Katongo named one of the two as Gilliard Kasonde of Mpika.
The body of the other passenger was still trapped in the vehicle at the time of the statement.
Ms Katongo said three passengers had been admitted to Isoka District Hospital while three others from other trucks were slightly injured and were treated as outpatients.
“People involved were Misheck Gwewa, aged 37, of unknown address who was driving a motor vehicle, Scania truck and trailer loaded with unknown number of bags of soya beans destined for Nakonde with six passengers on board, a stationary Scania truck and trailer registration,” she said.
Ms Katongo said another stationary Scania truck and trailer, a stationery unregistered Honda and a stationery Man truck and trailer registration were involved in the accident.
