THERE have been calls from bus owners and drivers for government to intervene in the issue of call boys operating illegal bus stations and markets in Lusaka.

A parliamentary committee on local governance, housing and chiefs affairs went on a fact finding mission in the city.

During this mission bus owners, associations and drivers told the committee that the transport business had been negatively affected as call boys had created illegal bus stations.

Apart from that they harassed both passengers and bus crews who were charged huge sums of money for a bus to load.

At ZAMBEEF on Freedom Way, a call boy who claimed to be in charge of the station but declined to be named said they decided to form their own bus stations to empower themselves.

He explained that buses that loaded at stations paid to the council through parking fee.

He further explained that contrary to allegations that the call boys harassed drivers, only ensured that there was law and order at the stations.

He accused some individuals who owned private bus stations of being selfish by wanting people to use their facilities.
