‘Weak’ husband survives divorce

A LUSAKA couple who went to the local court to seek divorce because of lack of sex ended up walking back home while holding hands after the Matero Local Court reconciled them.

Doreen Zulu, 36, of Chaisa Township had sued her husband, Thomas Zulu, of the same township for divorce.

The two were appearing before magistrate Pauline Newa.

They got married in 2000 and have five children.

Zulu told the court she loved Thomas and would like to be reconciled with him, but he did not support the family and they had problems when it came to fulfilling their conjugal obligations.

“He likes leaving me for months and does not give me money. Sometimes he brings at times he doesn’t. The major problem I brought him here for is sex. He does not have strength,” said Zulu said.

Thomas told the court that they had made love before they went court.

He was therefore surprised that his wife was alleging that he was weak in bed.

“We have always lived well. Our problems only started when I stopped work. We were even chased from our house. I am shocked she is saying I don’t do anything in the bedroom,” Thomas said.

He said he only left the house once when he was transferred to work from Kafue because they were building another lodge and the employer wanted him to oversee the works.

“I was chased because I refused to stay that side, otherwise I have never slept out,” he said.

The court observed that there was no communication between the two in the home.

“There is lack of communication. You need to sit down and let your wife know where you are going. Support is also very important. Show your wife how much you are getting and make a budget together. Financial problems end a lot of marriages,” magistrate Newa counselled the couple.

She advised them to live within their means.

Magistrate Newa told Thomas that his wife had not embarrassed him by bringing up the issue of sex but wanted to be helped.

“How will you be helped? She left her home to follow you because of sex. You should be active. Sex is supposed to be there unless one is sick. You can’t say you have no strength. Give her what you are supposed to give her and if there is a problem tell her,” she said.

Magistrate Newa advised the two to start advising each other and resolve issues amicably.

“Go and live well; the court has reconciled you,” she told the smiling couple.
