DIGGING up corpses at Mkushi’s Chikwasha cemetery has raised serious concerns to the community and the local authority has called for an end to the ugly practice.

Mkushi District Council chairman Evans Bwalya has warned people involved in the racket to stop it or risk the wrath of the law once caught.

Mr. Bwalya sounded the warning in interview with the Sun and described the practice as inhumane and a taboo in an African way of life.

He said it was sad development and inhumane for sane human beings to exhume bodies and disturb souls of the departed ones.

Mr. Bwalya further said, the act was unZambian and against the traditional culture because Zambians respect the dead.

“My humble appeal to those people involved in exhuming bodies to desist from the act. We are called a Christian Nation, and people can reduce themselves to go to the graveyard which we respect very much traditionally then they start exhuming bodies that is very bad.

“God is so great and faithful, one day they will be caught and it will be a big embarrassment. The graveyard should not be the money spinner for ritualists to make money for themselves.

“Let that place be for the departed beloved brothers and sisters to rest in peace and not to disturb their souls,” Mr. Bwalya said.

Mr. Bwalya explained that earlier people used to suspect that dogs were behind the act.

He has since urged the community not go and bury still born bodies in secret but to register with the council so that the grave number was allocated unlike digging shallow graves where to bury the feotuses.
