A PRIDE of stray lions has attacked and eaten a Mambwe boy in a gruesome incident in which only legs were recovered from the scene.
In an interview with the Sun, Zambia National Parks, Park Ranger South Luangwa area management unity Gibson Chanda, confirmed the incident and named the victim as Jairos Sakala 18 years of Ndeleya village in Chieftainess Msoro of Mdima Ward.

Mr Chanda said Sakala met his fate on March 29 around 18:00 hours when he went visiting at the next village and was attacked by the lions before he reached his destination.
“According to our report the young man met his fate when he left his village to visit his friends at the next village, but unfortunately he was attacked in the process before he could reach his destination,
“Our officers said they only found legs of the youth at the scene of the attack while the rest of body parts were assumed to have been eaten by the cats and that was what was reported even to the police and the legs have since been buried,” said Mr Chanda.

Mr Chanda said it was not common to have wild animals in the area where the young man was attacked.
He suspected the lions started visiting the area because of people who had settled there with their livestock.
“I suspect the lions are now following cattle that are being reared by the settlers,” said Mr Chanda
He warned residents living in game management areas to avoid making movements from one place to another at night because it was not safe.
Mr Chanda however said that two wildlife officers had been tasked to patrol the area to control the lions and ensure safety of the people.
