Councilor warns criminals

UNEMPLOYMENT should not be an excuse for anyone to drink beer from morning to sunset, insult or attack innocent people, Kapwepwe ward 25 councilor, Mwamba Salubusa, has warned.
The councilor warned that any person who will be found committing crimes with the excuse that they had no job risked being prosecuted.
Mr Salubusa said this after complaints by people in his ward that a number of youth gangs had emerged in the area which were attacking people regardless of the time of the day.
The residents complained that the gang members, which usually appealed intoxicated, attacked and robbed them in broad day light and gave an excuse that there were no jobs to keep them busy when asked why they troubled innocent people.
Carol Lishebe, a resident of Kapwepwe Ward, said she had stopped sending children to buy items from the area market for fear they may be attached and their merchandise stolen.
Mr. Salubusa disclosed that a Know-your-neighbour programme had been introduced in the ward to help identify and report suspicious persons and criminals.
“We are doing everything possible. Police officers, councilors, ministers are not witchdoctors so we are encouraging the people to report suspicious people. We need people on the ground to report to us what is happening in their respective areas,” he said.
He challenged the residents regardless of their political affiliations to make effort to attend community meetings and participate in finding solutions to the problems facing the area.
